FAN FORUM NBC DICTATORSHIP Because the Notre Dame-Boston Col- lege telecast was shown on NBC Sports Network (NBCSN), the NBC marketing department has kidnapped and taken over the Notre Dame contract. As I recall, the Shamrock Series is con- sidered a "home game" for purposes of the NBC-Notre Dame contract. So this apparently allows NBC to substitute their little-known, fledgling subsidiary network for purposes of this telecast. But that likely makes for a BIG differ- ence in the number of TV viewers for this game. Furthermore, the additional cost and annoyance to cable subscrib- ers has got to be not inconsiderable … certainly that's the case in my cable mar- ketplace (Phoenix). It just looks like NBC is trying to ar- tificially increase the number of cable subscribers to its NBCSN channel by its failure to handle the telecast under its own major (NBC) network auspices — as we would all expect it to do under the spirit of the contract. Looks like I'll have to miss the game. Dan Hasley '69 Phoenix 'PRO'ACTIVE STANCE Early in Coach Kelly's Notre Dame career he remarked that there was far too much NFL talk in the Irish locker room. So it was surprising to read the coach's comments about junior Mike McGlinchey in Andrew Owens' feature, "Standing Tall" in the Nov. 16 edition: "I don't think there's much doubt that he's going to be playing at another level. His athleticism, his length, his toughness, his IQ, how he carries himself, he's go- ing to be a great pro." Two years ago in a speech to a Notre Dame gathering at the Detroit Athletic Club, Brian Kelly is reported to have said that he tells his players, "The NFL Junior offense tackle Mike McGlinchey has been touted as a great pro prospect by head coach Brian Kelly, but the ultimate goals of graduating and helping Notre Dame win a national title still take priority.
