138 ■ THE WOLFPACKER ■ FOOTBALL RECRUITING when he snags passes. He had a hugely productive year as a sophomore, catching 104 passes for 1,451 yards and 13 touchdowns. Those numbers fell to 49 recep‑ tions for 981 yards and 12 scores in his junior campaign. Cauthen relies more on his strength than athleticism and projects as a possession re‑ ceiver in college. Rivals.com rates him as a three‑star player and the No. 57 wide re‑ ceiver nationally. He has verbally committed to UNC. 16. MATT MCKAY, QB Raleigh Wakefield High McKay is one of the most intriguing prospects in the state for several reasons — he just turned 16 years old this past October and he has grown from 6‑3, 170 pounds last summer to 6‑4¼, 181 pounds at NCSU's camp in June. A true dual‑threat quar‑ terback, he completed 55.0 percent of his passes for 2,119 yards with 22 touchdowns and 11 interceptions while running 187 times for 1,019 yards and a 11 scores for Wakefield as a junior. At NCSU's summer camp, McKay ran the 40‑yard dash in 4.79 seconds and had a 9‑3½ standing broad jump. He will need to continue getting stron‑ ger and also improve the consistency of his passing. His arm strength is fine, but his accuracy comes and goes. McKay, who is rated as a three‑star pros‑ pect by Rivals.com, has verbally committed to NC State. 17. XACH GILL, DT Wake Forest High Gill has been on the radar since he was a sophomore in high school thanks to his impressive 6‑5, 275‑pound frame. Gill has the size of a future college football lineman, though he is limited athletically. He has also made strides as a football player, posting 51 total stops six tackles for loss and four sacks last season for Wake Forest. Although he plays a lot of defensive end for Wake Forest, he is better suited to be a defensive tackle (or potentially an offensive lineman) in college. Rivals.com rates Gill as a four‑star pros‑ pect and the No. 15 defensive tackle nation‑ ally. He has offers from Miami, NC State, North Carolina, Penn State, Pittsburgh, Vanderbilt, Virginia, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest. ® ® Benjamin Franklin, one of our Founding Fathers wrote, "wealth is not his that has it, but his that enjoys it."
