INSIDE MICHIGAN ATHLETICS The Time And Effort Just Aren't Worth It By Brandon Brown The satellite camp idea is a good one, but it's simply not worth the effort and time spent — especially if it's going to have close to 50 stops. The cost ap- proached $350,000 and the coaches are not on campus for virtually the entire month of June. The Michigan brand is already huge so the promotion of the Block M is minimal. On the recruiting side of things, Jim Harbaugh and his assistants will identify and offer such a small number of kids from these camps that it's not worth all of the locations. That being said, even if a kid is offer-worthy and decides to commit to U-M, evidence from last year shows that they may not even end up in Ann Arbor. Sir Patrick Scott, Rashad Weaver, Kiante Enis, Victor Viramontes and Antwaine Richardson all pledged to Michigan only to change their minds when National Signing Day got closer. The satellite camp concept is cool, but it doesn't need to be such an under- taking. The NCAA tried to ban them altogether, but when that didn't stick Har- baugh decided to take it to another level. He and his staff already had a pretty extensive plan in place, but the total didn't creep close to the 50 mark until after POINT ❙ COUNTERPOINT ARE THE SATELLITE CAMPS REALLY WORTH IT? Jim Harbaugh and U-M put together a satellite camp tour that included more than 40 stops. PHOTO BY BRANDON BROWN
