season poll but finished 10-3 and No.
12 nationally following a 41-7 blow-
out of Florida in the Citrus Bowl. First-
year head coach Jim Harbaugh got
the most out of quarterback Jake Ru-
dock — the Iowa transfer established
himself as a difference-making starter
— and the defense became a force.
U-M beat No. 22 Brigham Young 31-
0, Maryland 28-0 and No. 13 North-
western 38-0 while pitching three
straight shutouts. Michigan hadn't
shut out three consecutive opponents
since 1980, and no Football Bowl Sub-
division school had achieved that feat
since Kansas State in 1995.
4. Outdoor Track and Field — The
2016 team posted its best season
since 1997 with an outstanding per-
formance at the NCAA Outdoor Cham-
pionships in early June. The program
had its first national champion since
2007 in Mason Ferlic (steeplechase),
and the Wolverines produced one of
just two top-15 national finishes in the
program's last 55 seasons, finishing
tied for 13th after winning the Big Ten
and the NCAA Great Lakes Regional.
5. Wrestling — The Wolverines
closed out the 2016 NCAA Cham-
pionships No. 9 nationally behind
heavyweight Adam Coon's second
consecutive top-three NCAA finish.
Coon, seeded fifth at his weight class,
notched pins in his final two bouts
and U-M used those bonus points to
surge into the top 10.
Michigan finished 13-3 overall in the
regular season with a 21-11 win at
No. 6 Ohio State the highlight of the
regular season.
