BY WHITELAW REID K YLE GUY KNEW THE itiner- ary like the back of his hand. He played in an all-star game in his home state of Indiana on June 12. Directly afterward, he left for Charlottesville, where he was scheduled to arrive at 3 a.m. Yes, it's fair to say Virginia's most highly rated basketball recruit was counting the days. "I can't wait," Guy said in late May. Neither can UVA fans. The sweet-shooting guard with great leaping ability headlines a four-member class that also includes New Rochelle (N.Y.) Iona Prep point guard Ty Jerome, Wyn- newood (Pa.) Friends Central small forward De'Andre Hunter and Durham (N.C.) Voy- ager Academy big man Jay Huff. The group is considered Virginia's most highly regarded since former head coach Pete Gillen landed Majestic Mapp, Travis Watson and Roger Mason Jr. in 2000. Guy, an Indianapolis native, is the first Virginia recruit to earn McDonald's All- American status since Sylven Landesberg in 2008 and just the third since 1999 (Mapp). In Chicago in March, Guy took part in the legendary game and was one of just two players who participated in both the dunk and three-point shooting contests, making the finals in both. "It was an amazing opportunity being there with all those people who are the top 24 players in the country," Guy said. "It's really competitive, and you get a feel for what college is going to be like and the next level. That was not a culture shock, but something I wasn't used to. "But after one practice, you get used to it. Everyone's going hard and the actual game was really neat. Playing in an NBA gym [United Center] was something I'd never done before. And the three-point and dunk contests were my favorite part. That was a lot of fun." Guy took people by surprise with his per- formance in the dunk contest. Early in his high school career, he was known as just a shooter. HOOSIER HERO Incoming First-Year Guard Kyle Guy Capped His Prep Career By Being Named The Top Player In Indiana
