Of the 25 new NCAA proposals that become effective Aug. 1, 2016, one very important piece of legislation was adopted to provide NCAA member institutions with a better framework to address academic misconduct. The new academic integrity legislation establishes a balance between an institution's aca- demic integrity issues and the NCAA's adherence to upholding academics as an NCAA core principle for its members. Similar to what we do at UVA and the Honor Code, the new rule requires schools to maintain and adhere to written academic integrity policies that apply to the entire student body. Therefore, an institution must cre- ate and follow their own academic policies when an academic integrity issue involves a student-athlete, regardless of the circumstance. Under the newly adopted academic integ- rity rule, an NCAA academic misconduct violation would occur if an institution violates its own school's academic misconduct policy. Impermissible academic assistance would now be clearly defined as involving an institutional staff member or booster and resulting in a student-athlete being allowed to compete while ineligible. Further, this impermissible academic assistance could range from a violation of a school's policies regarding academic honesty or integrity (e.g. honor code violation) to the provision of substantial academic assistance that is not available to the general student body.
