TOP MEN'S TEAMS The tennis team came up aces again, annexing its second consecutive NCAA championship (and third in the last four seasons) by defeating Okla- homa 4-1 in the final. Virginia (30-4) was the No. 1 seed in the 64-team tournament. On the way to their championship match with the No. 11 Sooners, the Cavaliers beat No. 16 Oklahoma State, No. 9 Florida and No. 13 California. Second-year Henrik Wiersholm clinched the championship for UVA by winning a second-set tiebreaker at No. 6 singles. Virginia's track and field team continued its climb up the ladder of prominence by posting the pro- gram's best-ever finish (seventh) at the NCAA Out- door Championships. Previously, the best Virginia had placed was 17th in 2015. Even more notable was the fact that since 1934 the Cavaliers had never finished in the top 20 na- tionally in this sport, but now have done so for three straight seasons (twice outdoors and once indoors). At the ACC Outdoor Championships, UVA finished third while Mihaljevic earned Most Valuable Per- former accolades after he captured his third consecu- tive discus title with a season-best throw of 204 feet, 10 inches. It was the nation's third-longest throw. Mihaljevic continued his prowess when he also finished first in the shot put, which gave him a career total of seven indoor and outdoor ACC titles in the two events. The soccer team continued to show that a berth in the NCAA Tournament is built into its schedule. Virginia (10-5-3) has earned 35 consecutive trips to the national event, which is the longest current streak in Division I men's soccer. The number 35 also signifies the number of con- secutive winning seasons for the program, which is tied for the fifth-longest streak in NCAA history. Thirteen may be considered an unlucky number, but that wasn't the case with Virginia's baseball team. The Cavaliers (38-22) reached the NCAA Tournament for a 13th time — the fifth-longest streak in Division I. Moreover, Virginia is one of only 16 schools to reach at least 13 consecutive NCAA Tournaments. Despite losing 5-4 to William & Mary in the Char- lottesville Regional, Virginia placed a trio of players on Baseball America's All-America squad: pitcher Connor Jones (second team), catcher Matt Thaiss (second team) and pitcher/outfielder Adam Hase- ley (third team). Head coach Tony Bennett's basketball team (29-8), which featured the ACC's top player in All-American Malcolm Brogdon, earned its third consecutive berth to the NCAA Tournament and reached the Elite Eight for the first time since 1995.
