The Virginia rowing squad claimed first place in all five races at the ACC Championships to win its seventh straight league title and 16th in 17 years. PHOTO BY MATT RILEY/COURTESY UVA TOP WOMEN'S TEAMS While seven is considered a lucky number, luck had nothing to do with the rowing team winning five races to capture its seventh consecutive ACC championship. The No. 5 Cavaliers amassed 99 points. Overall, Virginia has won 16 of the 17 ACC championship regattas. The varsity eight earned ACC Crew of the Year honors for a fifth consecutive year after winning its race in 6:14.989 — the second-fastest varsity eight time at the ACC Championships. UVA's No. 18 golf team emulated the rowing team by retaining its ACC title with a score of 855. Red- shirt fourth-year Lauren Coughlin emerged as the individual champion by carding a 9-under-par 207, including a birdie putt on the 54th and last hole. The No. 1 soccer team (16-1-2) came this close to claiming the ACC championship. In the final against No. 4 Florida State, the teams were dead- locked 2-2 after regulation and two overtime peri- ods. Then, in the seventh round of a shootout, the Seminoles scored to end the marathon. The Cavaliers earned one of four No. 1 seeds for the NCAA Tournament, but they missed a third consecutive trip to the College Cup in even more painful fashion. UVA and Rutgers were scoreless for 110 minutes before the Scarlet Knights scored in the ninth-round of a shootout. Fourth-year for- ward Makenzy Doniak broke the school record for most goals in a career by scoring 60. The swimming and diving team won its ninth straight ACC title, and then finished fifth at the NCAA Championships for the second consecutive year. The Cavaliers' team total of 264 points was the most at the national meet in school history and gave the program its first back-to-back top-five performances. UVA's field hockey team (15-6) advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament before los- ing 2-1 to Duke. Second-year midfielder Tara Vit- tese and third-year midfielder Lucy Hyams were voted to the Division I All-Region first team, while third-year striker Riley Tata was named to the sec- ond team. The basketball team (18-16) reached the round of 16 in the Women's National Invitation Tourna- ment before losing to Hofstra 65-57. Faith Ran- dolph, who finished second in scoring and re- bounding in the ACC, and Breyana Mason qualified for the ACC All-Academic Team. Cleo Boyd led the track and field team to its highest finish (fourth) since 2013 at the ACC Out- door Championships. Boyd became the first Cava- lier ever to capture the 5,000 and 10,000 meters, and the first ACC female to do so since 2010.
