HOO'S HOT Recognizing the "Who's Hoo" in UVa athletics — Cavalier student-athletes, past, present and future who are making news around the world of sports. Becky Sauerbrunn ◆ Soccer The 2007 graduate will help lead the United States women's soccer team's q u e s t to d e fe n d i t s g o l d medal from the 2012 London Olympic Games this August in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The defender was named a team captain this year in her second Olympic appearance after earning 107 caps for the national team, which included a victory at the 2015 FINA Women's World Cup. During that season, she led the squad with 25 starts and 2,184 minutes played. At Virginia, she was a three-time All-American, four-time All-ACC pick and the 2007 ACC Defensive Player of the Year. Leah Smith ◆ Swimming The rising fourth-year from Pittsburgh will make her Olympic debut in Rio after finishing second in the 400- and 800-meter free- style and third in the 200-me- ter freestyle at the U.S. Olym- pic Team Trials. The four-time NCAA cham- pion (500- and 1,650-yard freestyle in 2015 and '16) will compete in the 400 and 800, while her showing in the 200 earned her a spot on the 4x200-meter freestyle relay. She is the first American swimmer from UVA to compete in three Olympic events and the first Cavalier American to qualify for two indi- vidual races. Matt Thaiss ◆ Baseball The third-year from Jackson, N.J., was taken 16th overall by the Los Angeles Angels in June's MLB Draft, giving the Cavaliers three straight years with a first-round selec- tion for the first time in pro- gram history. Just the fourth two-time All- American in school annals, he is also the highest- drafted catcher ever from UVA and the 10th overall first rounder. In 2016, he earned second-team All-ACC laurels and was tabbed as a second-team All- American by Baseball America after pacing the squad with a .375 batting average, 10 home runs and 59 RBI. Henry Wynne ◆ Track & Field The third-year swept the indoor and outdoor ACC Men's Track Performer of the Year awards after winning conference and national titles in the indoor mile and following it up with another ACC cham- pionship and a third-place finish in the outdoor 1,500 meters at the NCAA Cham- pionships. Th e n a t i ve o f We s t p o r t , Conn., was undefeated in the 1,500 during the regular season and set a school record in the event with a time of 3:38.05 in the Virginia Challenge. Wynne also won the 1,500 at the Nor th American, Central American and Caribbean (NACAC) Under-23 Championships in July.
