46 THE WOLVERINE JANUARY 2017 T he result wasn't what Michigan wanted while taking on the daunt- ing task of traveling to Pauley Pavil- ion for a showdown against No. 2 UCLA. The Bruins pulled away at the end for a 102-84 victory Dec. 10, af- ter a game-long shootout that proved tightly contested most of the way. UCLA shot a scorching 67.2 per- cent from the field (39 of 58), going 15 for 24 (62.5 percent) from three-point range. In other words, a team that had just gone into Rupp Arena and taken down Kentucky didn't leave the Wolverines much breathing room. Michigan responded by connect- ing on 53.8 percent (14 of 26) from three-point range and 92.3 percent (12 of 13) from the free throw line. But it wasn't enough in a showdown featuring 22 combined three-pointers by the Wolverines and Bruins in the first half alone. Michigan went 12 of 16 and UCLA 10 of 14 in that fire-fingered stretch, U-M building a 48-41 lead before Bruins star Lonzo Ball made good on an NBA three to square the game at the half, 50-50. In the end, the Wolverines couldn't keep the up with the blistering pace over the final few minutes, when UCLA pulled away. But Michigan head coach John Beilein and his play- ers saw plenty off which to build in the U-M effort. "We were on the big stage, playing on ESPN2 against the No. 2 team in the country," senior forward Zak Irvin noted. "Going into this game, we had nothing to lose. No one thought we were going to win this game anyway. We just came out with that mentality." The Wolverines didn't win it, but probably came out with a jolt of added confidence for future show- downs. Meanwhile, Irvin's fellow se- nior, guard Derrick Walton Jr., made the list of Wolverines topping 1,000 career points with his nine-point ef- fort in the contest. Here is a look at the 1,000-point club at Michigan, as it stood through the UCLA game: MICHIGAN BASKETBALL 1,000-POINT SCORERS Rk. Player Points Years 1. Glen Rice 2,442 1986-89 2.
