Marlyn Madey (2004) and Shepard (2009) were named EAGL Scholar-Ath- letes of the Year. "I believe when you recruit a highly in- telligent individual, you can teach them more than you can teach someone who is not as intelligent, and they can become a lot better athlete," Stevenson said. "I promised myself years ago that if I had a choice between a fair gymnast with good grades and a good gymnast with fair grades, I would take the fair gymnast and work hard to help them become a better one." Stevenson, a native of Waterloo, Iowa, and a 1978 graduate of the state's flagship university, was a Big Ten champion and qualified for the NCAA championships as a Hawkeye gymnast. He spent one season as a graduate as- sistant at Massachusetts before joining the Wolfpack as an assistant. In 1984, he re- ceived his master's degree from NC State in recreational resources management. ■ AN INDEPENDENT AGENT HAS FREEDOM OF CHOICE. IS YOUR INSURANCE AGENT FREE TO GET YOU A BETTER DEAL?
