www.BLUEANDGOLD.com OCT. 2, 2017 7 FAN FORUM FROM THE WEBSITE Fan conduct was a topic of interest recently on BlueandGold.com. Here's a small sample. Iam4Irish: I ran a golf tournament recently. Some of the golfers brought an older gentleman to see me because they knew how much I bleed Notre Dame. This guy was a Georgia fan and attended the game. He could not stop telling me how much he and his group enjoyed the experience. He said his opinion of Notre Dame fans before was negative. However, after this he said he is now one of the big- gest fans of our university. He could not believe how welcoming everyone was to his group. He was pleasantly shocked and never experienced this before at any game … This my friends is why Notre Dame is so special. He said he was sorry Notre Dame lost but happy his team won, and said the experience would not have been any different, regardless of outcome. IrishFan4Life1987: That's great, but we still lost the game. I'm over the whole "Hey guys, we got our asses kicked, and the visiting fans had a great time watching it happen too" moral victories. Sorry, I don't find that very uplifting. Jerbach: Being a high-class fan base and welcoming opponent fans at our university has nothing to do with losing any game. There may be times when the football team is subpar, but game day at Notre Dame is still one of the mecca's of college football. Stevmonster: Of course he loved it. It was a home game for him. I'm guessing the crew of Notre Dame fans from 1988 wouldn't be as hospitable — and wouldn't sell their tickets. BigNDFan80: It's not comparable. Of course they're not going to sell their tickets because it was better to watch the game in the stadium than on a crappy television from 1988. It also wasn't as easy to sell your tickets back then. Your market only existed outside the stadium, as opposed to today where you can literally sell your ticket to anyone in the world. NDorBust: We won the best fans award … again. Yay. GoldenJudge: Nice story. And, it is repeated and has been over the decades. The Tallahassee Sentinel published a letter to the editor from a Florida State fan after he attended the 1993 No. 1 vs. No. 2 game at ND. He was blown away like most everyone else — and they lost. Scoreboard369: Football games are important but they are just a game and a diversion from the ten- sion and trials of everyday life. Sometimes, we all attach too much importance to them. This summer, the senior punter was named a nominee for the 2017 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team, one of the most pres- tigious off-the-field honors in college football. He has led the Irish football team in community service hours each of the last two seasons, including 2016-17 when he logged almost twice as many official hours as the next player, thereby earning the 2016 Irish Around the Bend Award, given to the Irish football player that bests serves the community. Newsome was one of five Notre Dame student-athletes to capture the Commu- nity Champion Award in 2016-17 that recognize those "who study for the sake of learning, give for the sake of giving, and understand that personal accom- plishment is never achieved alone." Newsome also received the ACC's Top Six for Service Award in 2016, presented annually to six student- athletes from each conference institu- tion who show outstanding dedication to community service and outreach programs.
