16 OCT. 2, 2017 BLUE & GOLD ILLUSTRATED UNDER THE DOME UNDER THE DOME Irish student-athletes excelling on the field and in the classroom Jake Evans — Hockey The senior forward from Toronto, Ontario, was named team captain for the 2017 season. He served as an alternate captain dur- ing Notre Dame's run to the Frozen Four last season. During his junior cam- paign, Evans posted career highs for goals (13), assists (29) and overall points (42). He is the fourth- leading returning scorer in all of college hockey. Sam Fry — Volleyball The senior middle blocker from Cincinnati was named the ACC Volley- ball Player of the Week Sept. 18 after leading the Irish to a 3-0 record in the Shamrock Invitational. Fry posted a team-best hitting percentage of .510 and finished the tournament with 29 kills and 14 blocks. In Notre Dame's 3-0 win over Southern Illinois Sept. 16, she led all Irish players with 13 kills. Annie Heffernan — Cross Country For the second straight year, the junior from Cincinnati led the way for the Irish in the National Catholic, an annual event hosted by Notre Dame. Heffernan took first place in the women's five-kilometer race with a time of 17:29.4. Freshman Anna Sophia Keller finished just behind Heffernan with a time of 17:31.8. Overall, the Irish finished in first place with a total of 34 points, giving the program its 49th all-time victory in the event. Thomas Ueland — Soccer The junior midfielder from Lexington, Ky., buried a game-winning goal for No. 1 Notre Dame in a home matchup with Bowling Green Sept. 9. With the game tied at 1-1 in the 77th minute, he took an assist from senior for- ward Jeff Farina and netted his first goal of the season to give the Irish a 2-1 lead. The goal was the third game-winner and sev- enth overall tally of Ueland's Irish career. TOP OF THE CLASS ✦ GIMME FIVE Junior quarterback Brandon Wimbush's 207- yard rushing performance in the 49-20 victory versus Boston College Sept. 16 shattered a 48-year Notre Dame record by a signal-caller. During a 47-0 victory versus Navy in 1969 — in which the Irish compiled a school-record 720 yards of total offense that still stands — reserve quarterback Bill Etter rushed for a QB school-re- cord 146 yards, highlighted by a 79-yard score. Wimbush is the third different quarterback under head coach Brian Kelly to surpass 100 rushing yards in a game, joining DeShone Kizer (twice) and Andrew Hendrix (who had 111 ver- sus Air Force in 2011, in a reserve role). Malik Zaire almost achieved it in a 31-28 Music City Bowl win over LSU in 2014 with 96 yards. With two 100-yard rushing efforts already in his first three starts, Wimbush could tie Carlyle Holiday as the only Notre Dame quarterbacks to have three 100-yard rushing performances in a career. All three of Holiday's came as a sophomore for the 5-6 Irish in 2001. Here are the top five single-game rushing outputs by a Notre Dame quarterback: Quarterback (Year) Yards (Opponent) 1. Brandon Wimbush (2017) 207 (B.C.) 2. Bill Etter (1969) 146 (Navy) 3. DeShone Kizer (2015) 143 (Temple) 4. Tony Rice (1989) 141 (Penn State) 5. Carlyle Holiday (2001) 130 (W.Va.) Note: Kizer also had 128 yards in a 38-36 loss at Stanford in 2015, while Holiday had 122 in a 24-7 win versus Pitt in 2001. I love the game, and I would say that's my favorite part." Who's The Best Player You've Ever Lined Up Across From?: "Probably [former Alabama and current Baltimore Raven linebacker] Tim Wil- liams from Baton Rouge. He just got drafted." CHARTING THE IRISH NOTRE DAME AND THE RUN GAME Notre Dame's 49-20 victory over Boston College provided Irish fans with one of the top rushing performances the program has seen the past several decades. Junior quarterback Brandon Wimbush (207) and junior running back Josh Adams (229) combined for 436 rushing yards and four touch- downs, becoming the first duo in school history to each rush for 200 yards in the same game and just the seventh pair to do so in NCAA annals. The Irish finished the game with 515 rushing yards, which ranks fourth in program history since 1964 when Ara Parseghian took over. Wimbush and Adams have been part of the top three performances under current head coach Brian Kelly with two coming this season: Boston College and Temple (422). The third occurred in 2015 against Massachusetts, with Ad- ams accounting for 133 yards and Wim- bush 92 in the team's 457-yard total. In the 49-16 win against Temple this season, Wimbush rushed for 106 yards and Adams contributed 161.
