COMPLIANCE CORNER APRIL 2012 Hello Virginia Athletics Foundation members, The Athletics Compliance Office has undergone several person- nel changes since October 2011. First, I accepted the associate athletics director for compliance position. Prior to coming to Vir- ginia, I was the associate athletics director for compliance at the University of Georgia for six years. I also worked at the NCAA for two years, Clemson University for three years and Jacksonville University for three years. This past January, the athletics department hired Robert Slavis from Georgia State University as the assistant athletics director for compliance. Robert had been the assistant athletics director for compliance at Georgia State the past eight years. Prior to Georgia State, Rob also worked at Jacksonville University. Art Markos continues to serve as the assistant director and has been with com- pliance at the University of Virginia for nine years. Collectively, we have 34 years of compliance experience and we look forward to working with you. Today, more than ever, institutions are under intense scrutiny by the media and NCAA to make sure their athletics programs are being administered to the highest degree of compliance. In 2011 alone, the NCAA found 26 institutions involved in major violation cases. In each issue of the Cavalier Corner, the Com- pliance Office will include a "Compliance Corner" to help edu- cate our donors regarding NCAA and ACC rules. Our goal at the University of Virginia is to ensure that we are not one of those 26 schools referenced above. As we do with our coaches, staff and student-athletes, please "Ask Before You Act" regarding your in- teractions with current student-athletes and potential prospective student-athletes. To help answer any questions you may have, the Compliance Office can be reached at (434) 982-5018 or via e-mail at athletics- compliance@virginia.edu. Thank you for your support of Virginia Athletics and Go 'Hoos!
