14 THE WOLVERINE JANUARY 2018 INSIDE MICHIGAN ATHLETICS MICHIGAN'S TOP PERFORMERS Ice hockey senior forward Tony Calderone: The vet- eran recorded his first career hat trick in a 4-0 shutout of rival Michigan State Dec. 7 at Yost Ice Arena. Calderone completed the hat trick with his 13th goal of the season at the 16:32 mark of the third period; his 13 goals through the season's first 15 games are the most by a Michigan player since Louie Caporusso also did so in the 2008-09 campaign. As of Dec. 18, he is tied for fifth nationally in goals. Men's soccer junior midfielder Ivo Cerda: The junior was named to the Academic All-America first team, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced Dec. 7. Cerda is just the second athlete in program his- tory to earn the distinction, joining former U-M midfielder Matt Niemeyer in 2004. He is no stranger to outstanding accomplish- ments in the classroom — he is also a two- time Academic All-Big Ten honoree and a multiple-time U-M Academic Achievement winner. Women's basketball senior guard Katelynn Flaherty: She scored 23 points in a 74-49 setback to No. 5 Louisville Nov. 16 to become the program's all-time leading scorer. The se- nior upped her career point total to 2,091, passing the previous mark of 2,076 held by Diane Dietz (1978-82), a record that had stood for 35 years. The senior played in 39 of the game's 40 minutes against the Cardinals, and made 8 of 14 shots from the floor and 5 of 6 from three-point range. As of Dec. 20, she has 2,161 career points scored. Wrestling redshirt junior 157-pounder Alec Pantaleo: The Canton, Mich., native earned Big Ten Co-Wrestler of the Week honors after cap- turing the 157-pound title with a 5-0 record at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational Dec. 1-2 in Las Vegas. The 2016 All-American, who redshirted last year, grabbed two bo- nus wins and three victories over nationally ranked opponents (two of which were Big Ten foes). Pan- taleo tallied four takedowns to defeat Nebraska's fourth- ranked Tyler Berger 9-3 in the semifinals. He then eased past Ohio State's sixth-ranked Micah Jordan 10-3 in the championship behind two takedowns and a four-point near fall. In the Dec. 11 national rankings, he was listed fourth by FloWrestling. Volleyball junior outside hitter Carly Skjodt: She was tabbed as the Sports Imports/AVCA Na- tional Player of the Week Nov. 21 after lead- ing Michigan to consecutive victories over top-25 foes (No. 8 Michigan State Nov. 15 and No. 15 Purdue Nov. 18). Skjodt led the Wolverines with 17 kills and 12 digs against the Spartans, and then racked up 16 kills and 16 digs in the victory over the Boilermakers. She is just the second player in program history to win the award, joining outside hitter Juliana Paz (on Nov. 24, 2009). — Austin Fox MAIZE AND BLUE NOTEBOOK MICHIGAN SETS SCHOOL RECORD FOR FALL ACADEMIC ALL-BIG TEN HONOREES The Big Ten office released its fall 2017 Academic All-Big Ten teams Dec. 6, and a school-record 122 Michigan student- athletes made the list. U-M's 122 selections were the most of any university in the conference, narrowly edging out Penn State's 118. In order to qualify for the Academic All-Big Ten team, those in contention must be in at least their second academic year at their respective school and maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher. U-M student-athletes from seven different sports made the list — nine from field hockey, 48 from football, 13 from men's cross country, 20 from women's cross country, 10 from men's soccer, 15 from women's soccer and seven from volleyball. Of the school-record and league-leading 48 who made it from football, four were being honored for the third time — fifth- year senior wide receiver Jack Wangler, former redshirt junior wideout Maurice Ways, redshirt junior linebacker Noah Furbush and redshirt junior tight end Ian Bunting. Even more incredibly, fifth-year senior defensive tackle Mau- rice Hurst was honored for the fourth time. Redshirt junior linebacker Noah Furbush finished the 2017 season with 28 tackles, including 1.5 for loss, and two fumble recoveries. He also earned his third Academic All-Big Ten honor off the field.
