TAKING THE NEXT STEP The Cavaliers Are Determined To Earn An NCAA Invite After Just Missing Out Last Season L BY SHANE METTLEN AST SPRING, HEAD coach Joanne Boyle and her Virginia wom- en's basketball team sat expectantly during the NCAA Tournament selection show, waiting for the Cavaliers' name to be called while one by one other programs popped up, taking all 64 spots. It was a snub. Virginia had ex- ceeded expectations in Boyle's first season after leaving Califor- nia to take over for the legend- ary Debbie Ryan. The Cavaliers went 22-10 and 9-7 in the ACC, beat nationally ranked Tennessee and won five of six conference games to close out the regular season, yet the selection com- mittee deemed their résumé not quite good enough for the Big Third-year guard Ataira Frank- lin made the All-ACC honor- able mention list last season after averaging 12.4 points and 4.0 rebounds per game.
