80 ■ THE WOLFPACKER ■ PACK PAST member was in 1954, when they won 110 games and played the Giants in the Series. I cried when they lost in four games. Getting drafted by Cleveland was huge for me." When he walked into the Indians' club- house for the first time, Smith saw that his locker was between legendary coaches Rocky Colavito and Warren Spahn. Smith was in heaven. He played four seasons with his favorite team and was then taken in a dispersal draft by the expansion Seattle Mariners for the 1977 season. He played the inaugural year in Seattle, then retired from baseball after 121 career games as a an outfielder, in which he hit five homers, drove in 21 runs and stole nine bases. He never pitched in the major leagues. After baseball, he became a salesman for several electrical supply companies and Redi-Mix Concrete. Though he semi- retired in 2015, he still works two days a week for his old company and spends two nights a week at Raleigh's Diamond Stars Baseball, which he started 33 years ago, giving private hitting instructions. At the reunion for the 1968 team, Smith threw out the first pitch from the mound of Doak Field at Dail Park — only because he couldn't swing at it instead. ■ Tim Peeler is a regular contributor to The Wolfpacker.
