From the Desk of the VAF Development Intern Happy New Year Cavalier Fans! I hope you were all able to enjoy the holidays with family and friends as much as I did. It was great to spend some time home in Pennsylvania and now I am happy to be back on Grounds. Closing out 2012 was a whirlwind of excitement and busyness here at the Virginia Athletics Foundation. Each staff member has been hard at work in continuing the support of our student-athletes. As a development intern, the end of the year was an especially exciting time for me. I have now seen the many transitions of the fundraising year, going from a quieter office setting in the summer when students are mostly gone, to the thrill of the football season countdown in which the VAF assists donors with tickets, parking and suites, to very busy November and December months as the year comes to an end, where deadlines must be met and basketball season is in full swing. With 2013 now officially underway there are many new and exciting things happening at the VAF, such as new campaign and membership materials to be mailed in early February. I have completed the stewardship and campaign phase of my internship and am now working with the suites and events team. I am responsible for assisting with the planning and execution of various events, researching suite operation improvements, constructing event reference guides and updating event hotel spreadsheets. This has been an easy transition as the suites and events team and stewardship and campaign manager work closely together. Many of my new responsibilities go hand in hand with some of my prior tasks. One of the big events that I have been involved with is Step Up to the Plate that takes place on February 1. This is the 11th annual Step Up to the Plate, an event that supports the Virginia baseball team. Having attended this event in the past, it has been exciting to see just how many people are involved in making this special night happen as well as the extensive planning that goes into it. Working at the Virginia Athletics Foundation has been an extremely rewarding experience. I am enjoying the relationships that I am continuing and creating with UVa staff, athletes and VAF donors. I enjoy coming to work every day because I am surrounded by people who have a passion, like me, for this wonderful university and athletics program. With a new year and new goals, I look forward to continuing the success of Virginia Athletics. Go 'Hoos! — Chelsea Shine Wayne and Sue Shaner VAF Member Of The Game Members of the Game are individuals who have a history of loyal support for the athletics program at the University of Virginia. VAF members Wayne and Sue Shaner were Members of the Game for the Miami football game. They received on-field recognition and an appearance on Hoo Vision. In Mr. Shaner's words, "I support VAF because as a local businessman and having started The Overhead Door Company of Charlottesville from the ground up in 1979, I know the hard work and continuous effort needed to build something successful. I am proud to support the VAF, the student-athletes and Coach London as they put in the hard work and effort needed to build a program the University and the state of Virginia can be proud of!"
