M By Andy Reid ike Bottom was happy. The Michigan men's swimming and diving coach since 2008, Bottom said his colleagues envied him. In recent years, many schools have made a push to consolidate the coaching staffs of their men's and women's swimming and diving programs. But Bottom did not have to split his focus and expertise on the different needs of the men's and women's teams. And he was starting to see his hard work pay off. His Wolverines finished a surprising fifth at the NCAA Championships last season, the program's best finish since 2004. Moreover, Michigan was losing just a handful of critical swimmers and was bringing in a promising recruiting class to replace them. He knew what kind of season the Wolverines could have in 2012-13. Then, longtime Michigan women's swimming head coach Jim Richard- Senior Ryan Feeley said of U-M's men's swimming team's NCAA title aspirations: "We need to be ready to compete.
