JULY 2019 ■ 137 ■ FOOTBALL RECRUITING (6-3, 235 pounds), but he is athletic. At the Nike Opening in Charlotte, Williams was laser-timed at 4.80 seconds in the 40-yard dash and 4.41 seconds in the shuttle. He also had a 33.4- inch vertical leap. Williams is ideally suited to play on the edge of a 3-4 defense, but he could also be a good fit for an aggressive scheme similar to the old Florida State 4-3 defenses that emphasized speed and quick- ness on the end rather than strength. The player who Rivals.com lists as a three-star recruit, the No. 21 prospect in the state and the No. 27 weakside defensive end in the nation picked Miami June 26 out of a final group that also included Louisville, UNC, Virginia Tech and West Virginia. 13. ANTHONY CARTER, OL Butler High The 6-4, 300-pound Carter has the po- tential to play either guard or tackle in college. He has been a mainstay on the line for one of the best high school programs in the Charlotte area over the past couple of seasons. He has strong hands, good feet and can deliver a knockdown push. He performed very well at the Rivals 3-Stripe Camp in Charlotte. He has a top 11 that includes NC State, which he visited in the spring. Also mak- ing the cut were Boston College, Central Florida, Illinois, Louisville, Michigan State, North Carolina, Syracuse, Texas A&M, Vir- ginia Tech and West Virginia. Rivals.com ranks Carter as a three-star prospect and the No. 24 recruit in the state. 14. SHANE WHITTER, LB Williams High Whitter wins the award for the heaviest hitter in the 2020 class, but he also proved at the Nike Opening Charlotte that he's got ath- leticism to go with it. Check- ing in at 6-0, 224 pounds, he was timed at 4.51 seconds in the 40-yard dash and had a 34.5 inch vertical leap. He is more of a north-south, downhill runner than a rangy linebacker and would probably operate best inside. As a junior, Whitter had 95 tackles, 12 stops for loss and three sacks, two forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, an interception and two blocked kicks (one punt, one field goal). He verbally committed to Wake Forest in March, and is rated as a three-star recruit and the No. 30 prospect in the state by Rivals.com.
