On Oct. 11, the 6-10, 220-pounder picked NC State over Pitt, South Florida, Denver and San Diego State. "I had a good relationship with the staff, and I can develop at NC State," he said. "I did have a feeling [on the official visit] because of the school, the city and just the staff. When I was watching practice, I thought about having a spot on the team." NC State was aiming to land a center to be paired in the future with Bates. "My strength is on defense — shot blocking and getting rebounds," Dowu- ona said. "I'm trying to develop my offen- sive side. They envision that I'll get better with my shot on offense and develop as a player." Dowuona enjoyed his other official visits, but when he sat down and thought about his future, the Wolfpack emerged as his choice. "I told the coaches and they were ex- cited, very excited," he remembered. NC State entered the recruiting picture a little later than other colleges for Dowuona, offering him July 31, but Keatts' personal- ity helped them make up ground quickly. "He's a good person with a great person- ality, and everybody likes him," Dowuona said. "He's just a great coach.
