78 ■ THE WOLFPACKER "Being a senior and being developed physically and emotionally, he is gaining maturity, and being a senior has created an air of confidence around him," McPhaul said. "He has put in a lot of work." If Shipp is an artist, then McLamb is straight power. He is the grandson of for- mer Campbell basketball and golf coach Jerry Smith, while his uncle Bill Smith played golf at UNC. "Because he is powerful, he'll get plenty of short balls to the green," McPhaul said. "He will be able to attack par fives and score on them. More than anything that is where he is at." Steinlechner of Innsbruck, Austria, has the tools to be a great player one day at NC State. The three freshmen will likely be some of the team leaders next year. "He's powerful and is a really gifted player," McPhaul said of Steinlechner. ■ Sometimes, adding just the right person to a team makes all the difference. He finished third in the European Amateur Championship last June, and was second in the Austrian Stroke Play Championship last May. He was fourth on the team with an average of 71.92 strokes in 12 rounds this past fall. Noting The Pack • The ACC had several teams in the Golf Coaches Association of America rankings last year — No. 3 Georgia Tech, No. 6 Wake Forest, No. 12 Duke, No. 17 Clemson and No. 23 North Carolina. NC State had 17 votes to finish No. 35. • GolfStat.com rankings through Nov. 12 featured Georgia Tech at No. 3, Duke at No. 7, Notre Dame at No. 8, Wake Forest at No. 10, Louisville at No. 15, UNC at No. 16 and Clemson at No. 24. NC State is ranked No. 56 overall in the country. " The league is loaded," head coach Press McPhaul said. "You can't be just good and show up, but you have to be good, show up and have a really good week [at the ACC Championships]. It's a demanding league." ■ Key Matches • At Sea Best Invitational, Feb. 3-4 in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. — The event, which has several "top heavy" squads, was won by Florida State last year, followed by North Florida, Florida, Liberty and NC State. • At Puerto Rico Classic, Feb. 16-18 in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico — NCSU head coach Press McPhaul simply called the Puerto Rico event hosted by Purdue as loaded. NC State placed fourth last year behind Georgia Tech, Georgia and Oklahoma. • ACC Championships, April 17-20 in New London, N.C. — The Wolfpack finished sixth last year, with Geor - gia Tech winning the title at 37 under par, and Virginia and Wake Forest finishing second and third, respectively.
