48 ■ THE WOLFPACKER W H E R E AR E T H E Y N O W ? BY JACEY ZEMBAL F ormer NC State center Kevin Thompson is represent- ing a different Wolfpack in his post-playing career. Thompson was hired in the spring of 2016 to be the head coach of the boy's basketball team at Walk- ertown (N.C.) High, whose team name is also the Wolfpack. It seems fitting for the 6-11 center that still holds some NC State records and is part of the tradition of former NBA play- ers produced by the school. "One way or another, I'll be Wolfpack until the day I die," Thompson said. The former Kernersville (N.C.) Glenn High product kept improving year by year, first under head coach Jim Valvano and then his last three years under Les Robinson. Thompson helped NC State earn a bid to the NCAA Tournament in 1991, was the team captain his senior year in 1992-93 and become a second-round pick by the Portland Trail Blazers in the 1993 NBA Draft. Thompson earned third-team All-ACC honors each of his last two seasons with the Wolfpack, while averaging better than 15.0 points, 8.0 rebounds and 1.0 block per game each year.
