"I got my letterman's jacket and couldn't wait to wear it at home over winter break," Terrell said. "I remem- ber wearing it and sweating my butt off in about 87-degree weather — and everyone's wondering why I have my letterman's jacket on." GLORY DAYS Moved to wide receiver as a sopho- more in 1987, Terrell was primarily a blocker in a run-oriented scheme while overshadowed by Heisman Trophy winner Tim Brown. Terrell's two catches for 63 yards prompted Holtz to deadpan that Terrell was one of the best receivers he's ever coached if catching the ball isn't a requirement. Meanwhile, defensive coordinator Barry Alvarez coveted Terrell's 4.4 speed and aggression, finding him a niche at free safety in 1988. Game six versus Miami was only his second career start at safety, but it was the launching point of a pros- perous era that would feature a na- tional title, a school-record 23-game winning streak, a second-round NFL Draft selection and a nine-year pro career with 70 starts. Yet, football alone never defined Terrell. His passion was aviation, and it was at Notre Dame that he met his wife, Elizabeth, who was enrolled at St. Mary's College across the street. The two would marry in 1996. "When you're a young player and choose to go to a school with such a great tradition and history, it's kind of like being a role-play actor," Terrell reflected. "You have a good movie or good role — and everyone can't see you doing anything else. I experienced that for a little while, and I wouldn't trade that experience for anything. "But for me it was a childhood dream to be a pilot, and then I also married my best friend. That's been the thrill of my life … it's been a fun, fun run." BEYOND FOOTBALL Closing in on their Silver Anniver- sary, Terrell and his wife have five children, including twins, with the youngest 16 — and they have dis- cussed adoption in the future. Oldest son Seth recently gradu- ated from Arizona State University in graphic design, while Veronica is a junior at St. Mary's College. Another son attends Holy Cross College. Former teammate/cornerback Stan Smagala has two daughters attend- ing St. Mary's, while 1984-87 quar- terback Terry Andrysiak and 1984-86 kicker John Carney each have one, leading to mini-reunions amongst them. In Chicago, Terrell regularly gets together with quarterback Tony Rice, nose tackle Chris Zorich and offen- sive guard Tim Ryan. After having played in the NFL from 1990-98, he embarked on his ca- reer as a pilot, including flying 757s for American Trans Air. "I had the privilege of flying all over the world, and taking a few thousand troops in and out of Operation Iraqi Freedom," Terrell said. "From there, I recognized as the kids were com- ing and growing, my wife wasn't too happy about me being gone so much, which made a lot of sense. "And I also recognized there were tremendous opportunities in infra- structure and airports." Thus, 15 years ago Terrell formed his own business — Terrell Materi- als — that manufactures concrete for high-volume projects such as airport runways and highways, and it has done business from Atlanta and Or- lando to the local O'Hare Airport in Chicago. It hasn't always required planes for Terrell to continue to soar. ✦ Terrell and wife Elizabeth have been married for 24 years and have been blessed with five children while he played nine years in the NFL, became an airline pilot and then opened his own business.
