18 DEC. 5, 2020 BLUE & GOLD ILLUSTRATED BY LOU SOMOGYI N otre Dame's defense does not believe in engaging in social distancing — or at least not on game day. The fleet afoot, physically domi- nating and fundamentally sound, well-coached group stole the show over the final three quarters during No. 2 Notre Dame's (9-0) 31-17 win at No. 19 North Carolina (6-3). With two offenses on school-re- cord-setting paces, it was originally anticipated to be a shootout where 40 points might not be enough to win. True to form, the Tar Heels and Fighting Irish rang up four consecu- tive touchdowns between them in a span of 8:51 in the first quarter. After that 14-14 deadlock, though, the Notre Dame defense took com- mand against a North Carolina unit that had been averaging 43.1 points and 563.4 yards of total offense per game during a 6-2 start. The Tar Heels managed just three points over the final 48 minutes and accumulated a paltry 78 yards of total offense in BRING TO HEEL A projected shootout at North Carolina took a different turn in No. 2-ranked Notre Dame's 31-17 victory
