RECRUITING NOTES • Notre Dame has 23 verbal commitments in its 2021 class after a surge of landing five new recruits between Nov. 16 and Nov. 24, followed by the expected loss of defensive end pledge David Abiara. The Mansfield (Texas) Legacy product announced his decomitment from the Irish on Nov. 25. Highland Springs (Va.) High's Kelvin Gilliam Jr., the nation's No. 7 defen- sive tackle and No. 79 overall player per Rivals, is a key prospect down the stretch for Notre Dame. Irish head coach Brian Kelly is looking to pull off the flip from Oklahoma to land the 6-4, 260-pounder. If Gilliam opts to stick with his pledge to the Sooners, the Fighting Irish may stand pat with its defensive line class or could go after Oxnard (Calif.) Pacifica defensive end Devin Aupiu, a Rivals three-star who is currently pledged to UCLA. Defensive line coach Mike Elston has been in contact with Aupiu. • Elston offered a pair of 2022 recruits with very strong Fighting Irish ties. Pittsburgh Central Catholic defensive tackle Donovan Hinish is the brother of Irish senior defensive tackle Kurt Hinish, and Red Bank (N.J.) Catholic defensive end Alex Bauman is the sibling of Notre Dame freshman tight end Kevin Bauman. Notre Dame was the first school to offer Hinish, and Pittsburgh has since thrown its hat into the ring. Bauman holds offers from Massachusetts, Rut- gers and William & Mary. We expect Notre Dame to land both prospects. • The day after Notre Dame knocked off Clemson, Elston dished out a new class of 2022 offer to Greenwood (Ind.) Center Grove's Caden Curry, who Rivals ranks as the nation's No. 4 strong-side defensive end and No. 35 overall prospect. "He said that they have some opening spots and thought I'd fit well in the spot he has open," Curry said. "It definitely shocked me; I've been waiting so long. I went to their junior day and a game last year. It kind of came out of nowhere. "Basically everyone in Indiana is a Notre Dame fan. I watched them grow- ing up, too. Knowing that they're an academic powerhouse and also are good on the field — they have it all." — Mike Singer Notre Dame is working hard to flip Highland Springs (Va.) High's Kelvin Gilliam Jr. — Rivals' No. 7 defensive tackle and No. 79 overall prospect nationally — from his Oklahoma commitment.
