inside michigan athletics Maize And Blue Notebook Coaching Changes • After losing his assistant coach to Florida, men's tennis coach Bruce Berque tabbed Jeremy Wurtzman to be his top assistant. Wurtzman spent four years as the head coach of the women's program at Denver, earning Western Athletic Conference Coach of the Year honors in 2013. He also worked as an assistant at Ohio State from 2008-09. "He has been a successful coach at every program he has worked with, and there is no doubt in my mind that Jeremy will make a tremendous impact on our program at Michigan," Berque said in a release. • Women's gymnastics has hired Dave Kurza to fill an opening as an assistant coach for Bev Plocki's team. Kurza spent the past four years as the head coach at Western Michigan and previously worked for Plocki from 1990-93. "We are so thrilled to have Dave coming back to join our staff here at Michigan," Plocki said in release. "Dave was an important part of helping me get the Michigan program on track and on the rise in the early 1990s. He left to become a head coach and now is coming back home to help us win that national title we have been seeking. I couldn't be happier." Champion • Former Michigan golfer Andrew Chapman (1999-2002) won the Michigan Amateur Golf Championship in late June, becoming the 15th Wolverine to win the state title. Overall, U-M golfers have claimed 25 championships among the 102-year tournament. Chapman shot 71-80 in two rounds of stroke play to draw the No. 32 seed in the head-to-head format, then proceeded to beat five golfers, including top seed Tom Werkmeister, en route to the finals. In the championship bout, Chapman took on and bested former Michigan baseball player Mike Ignasiak (1985-88) 1-up, birdieing the par-five, 550-yard 18th hole with a 20-foot putt. Representing The U.S. • Rising sophomore forwards Andrew Copp and Boo Nieves, and incoming freshman Tyler Motte and J.T. Compher have been invited to the U.S. National Junior Evaluation Camp Aug. 3-10. The four will vie for roster spots on the 23man team that will compete in the 2014 IIHF World Junior Championships Dec. 26, 2013-Jan. 5, 2014 in Malmo, Sweden.
