Just doing it the first time is always hard. I said, "This time next year, Chuck, it'll be a piece of cake, believe me." While Losey's long association with Galt has made for a smooth transition, the Lions' new strength coach has sought to put his own stamp on the program. "He's already added a lift group for the younger players, which I think was a phenomenal idea," Galt told The Athletic. "He's got two new strength coaches in Jon Fleury and Tyrone Smith that have brought a different element, which I think has been really positive as well. And he's made some program adjustments to the strength-power aspect, the lifting aspect, that I really liked, and he's also changed some of the aspects of the running and what we do from a speed and agility standpoint. "I think the winter workouts have been such a communal thing all these years. I think he's pretty much kept that very sim- ilar to what it was, just because we've had great success with our toughest training. … Chuck is awesome. He's got that big, booming voice, and he does a great job. He definitely has everybody's attention." Losey will benefit from the work that's being done on Penn State's weight room. The Nittany Lions' weight training facility is being upgraded as part of a $48.3 million overhaul of the Lasch Building. With construction underway, the Lions have had to create a makeshift workout area in nearby Holuba Hall this winter. The project is expected to be completed before the start of fall camp, and Losey played a major role in making it a reality. "Chuck is really good at that stuff," Galt told The Athletic. "He's got real good knowledge, just kind of coincidentally, on equipment and good equipment, bad equipment. … Basically, he was making all the decisions and didn't even know it. "So, when James and I brought him in — I guess it was the middle of Novem- ber — and told him what was going to go down and kind of swore him to secrecy, he said, 'OK, now I see why the whole weight room design was going the way it was go- ing there at the end. I thought you were getting lazy on me [laughs].' I said, 'No, I just wanted to make sure you were going to be happy with what it's going to be.'" Losey is happy with what it's going to be, and Penn State is happy to have pro- moted him. Players seem comfortable with him and his staff, and that's a must. So, next time you're at Beaver Sta- dium, you won't see Galt leading pregame warmups as he did for the past eight years. Instead, Losey now has that role — one for which he's been preparing for years and his that his mentor helped make happen. Said Losey, "To [work] with Dwight when I did in my career, and to have his mentor- ship over the past 11 years, it was an amaz- ing opportunity." ■
