In addition to five new com- mitments in the class of 2023, James Franklin and his staff hosted 34 pros- pects for official visits. Many of them have either committed to the Nittany Lions or ended up elsewhere, but there were still quite a few players considering Penn State as of early July. The Nittany Lions' class has met its needs at the tight end spot, but every other position group still has room for potential additions. Two positions in particular — running back and line- backer — are yet to feature any players, but that is expected to change in the coming weeks. At running back, Penn State had closed in on two prospects in particular: London Montgomery of Scranton, Pa., and Treyaun Webb of Jacksonville, Fla. That list got cut in half on July 7 when Webb, the No. 163 prospect nationally in the On3 Consensus, committed to Florida. Like Webb, however, Montgomery is a four-star prospect. He checks in at No. 366 nationally according to the On3 Consensus and is believed to have Penn State in his top two. The 5-foot-10, 180-pound Mont- gomery took three official visits earlier this summer, traveling to Virginia Tech (June 10-12), Penn State (June 17-19) and Boston College (June 24-26). He is expected to announce his decision in the coming weeks. At linebacker, both Tony Rojas of Fairfax, Va., and Ta'Mere Robinson of Pittsburgh set firm announcement dates. In fact, they were set to decide just a day apart, with Rojas planning to announce on July 14 and Robinson set for the following day. The 6-3, 225-pound Robinson and 6-2, 195-pound Rojas have been Penn State's top linebacker targets in the class for nearly a year now. Robinson is ranked just slightly higher in the On3 Consensus at No. 125 overall, with Rojas sitting at No. 129. They visited Penn State the same weekend, June 17-19, and the Nittany Lions were considered the team to beat with both players. Robinson's other top schools are Clemson and Virginia Tech, while Rojas has serious interest in Clemson and Georgia. If Penn State does land both lineback- ers and a running back, the class would jump to 18 commitments.
