SECOND QUARTER CALIFORNIA 10, NOTRE DAME 7 Top Moment: Notre Dame kicker Blake Grupe missed a 45-yard field goal, but the Bears were charged with an offsides penalty that gave the Irish a first down. The Irish took advantage of the call and scored two plays later on a 21-yard touchdown grab by junior running back Chris Tyree. Feature Performer: Tyree rushed 4 times for 18 yards and caught 2 passes for 26 yards on the Irish's lone touch- down drive of the first half. He rushed 3 more times for 12 yards the rest of the quarter. Stats: Cal outgained Notre Dame 112-90 in total yards. Notre Dame held the ball for 9:51 compared to 5:09 time of possession for Cal, but the Bears outscored the Irish 10-7. Items: Notre Dame's touchdown was in immediate response to a Cal touchdown on the previous drive … Graduate student safety DJ Brown made a play on third-and-goal from the Notre Dame 10-yard line to prevent Cal from scoring a late-half touch- down; the Bears took the lead on a 34- yard field goal instead … Notre Dame moved the ball to its own 45-yard line with 4 seconds left in the half but elected run the clock out by punting instead of throwing a Hail Mary. THIRD QUARTER CALIFORNIA 17, NOTRE DAME 14 Top Moment: Sophomore running back Audric Estime scored his second touchdown of the season on a 1-yard On the final drive of the game, the Fighting Irish had to survive two overturned turnovers — one by penalty and one by review — and a last-ditch Hail Mary pass into the end zone to hold off the Golden Bears for a 24-17 win.
