"The entire crowd stood in silence for one minute during the intermission while taps were sounded in memory of George Gipp, Notre Dame's star of stars," the paper reported. Castner returned the second half kick- off 50 yards, then added a 21-yard scam- per a few plays later. He plunged over from the 1-yard line, kicked the extra point and made the score 14-0. Later in the quarter, he drop-kicked a brilliant 45-yard field goal, then added a 35-yarder early in the fourth. Along the way, he also boomed several punts, including a 70-yarder. The record crowd was frenzied as Castner's amazing afternoon continued. Castner would total 100 yards on 17 carries, and he was aided by Don Miller's 130 yards on 14 rushes. The St. Paul se- nior was also a factor on defense. He cor- ralled one Hoosier for a 4-yard loss on a pass play. Then he picked off a pass and threaded his way 37 yards through the entire Indiana team for a final touchdown. Again, Castner booted the extra point. Final score: Paul Castner 27, Indiana 0. "The stellar Irish fullback made foot- ball history that will stand for a long time in his feat of scoring every point for Notre Dame in their 27-0 victory," the paper summarized. Two weeks later, in a 31-3 victory over Butler at Indianapolis, Castner suffered a severely injured hip, ending his foot- ball playing days. Rockne had a couple of fullbacks with reasonable size and experience on the roster, but turned to 162-pound sophomore Elmer Layden, known more as a track sprinter, and told him he would be a new type of fullback — a quick, slashing runner. So Layden joined Stuhldreher, Crow- ley and Miller in a backfield that would gain legendary status in the coming two seasons. But Paul Castner had more than ea r n e d h i s m o n i ke r a s " t h e Fi f t h Horseman." ✦ Jim Lefebvre is an award-winning Notre Dame author and leads the Knute Rockne Memorial Society. He rushed for 2 touchdowns, scored another on an intercep- tion return, and kicked 2 field goals and 3 extra points.
