12 THE WOLVERINE DECEMBER 2022   INSIDE MICHIGAN ATHLETICS U-M ATHLETICS RELEASES DETAILS OF VIDEO BOARD UPGRADES On Oct. 18, Michigan's athletics department released render- ings of the new scoreboards and details around some of the multimedia upgrades coming to Michigan Stadium and Crisler Center. The new video boards at The Big House are set to be installed prior to the 2023 football season, with the construction sched- uled to begin upon completion of the current campaign. The new boards will be the same height as the existing struc- tures but approximately 60 feet wider in each end zone. The project, which is self-funded through U-M Athletics via gifts from donors, will see a full replacement of the Michigan Stadium video boards in each end zone. Columns will be added to the structures that are currently in place to support the large board. The project includes Crisler Center control room and produc- tion upgrades and an installation of a new sound system in the seating bowl and concourse. Crisler Center's control room serves as one of the main hubs for athletic events on campus with in-game and offseason proj- ects for Michigan Stadium, Crisler Center, Yost Ice Arena, Ocker Field, Ray Fisher Stadium, Alumni Field, U-M Soccer Stadium and the South Campus Performance Center, home of indoor track and field and other teams. Michigan Sports Television (MSTV) also operates out of the Crisler control room and studio, producing programs such as "Inside Michigan Football," "Inside Michigan Basketball" and other videos for all 29 varsity programs. According to The Detroit News, the estimated costs for the related projects are set for around $41 million in total. — Anthony Broome JUWAN HOWARD CALLS MOMENT WITH SONS IN OPENER 'DREAM COME TRUE' Michigan basketball won its season opener on Nov. 9 by a score of 75-56 over visiting Purdue Fort Wayne, but it was more than just the first victory of the 2022-23 season. It was also the first time that head coach Juwan Howard coached his sons — Jett and Jace — in a college basketball game. There was a moment in the contest in which Jett assisted a 3-point basket up the floor to Jace, which was a milestone moment for the Howard family. The head coach spoke about it after the win. "It's a dream come true, because that's something that never happened," Howard said after the game. "Every day, it's one of those moments where you have a special time in your life where you get an opportunity to coach at your alma mater, and then knowing the times when you were in the NBA, or you were coaching in the NBA, how much you love your alma mater. "And we talked about the only college they will go to would be Michigan, teaching them the fight song and Michigan and Ohio State playing that football rivalry game, dressing up all my kids and my wife and my dog in Michigan and maize and blue. "To see it all come to fruition with the growth of both boys. You watched in the backyard, watched them in high school practice, then AAU, and now here in Ann Arbor, in front of our great crowd cheering them on. It is really a blessing. "Also, I peeked my eye over at their mom, because I could hear her. She has a big smile — she's loving each and every possession — it's a blessing." — Anthony Broome MAIZE AND BLUE NOTEBOOK Michigan Stadium will receive two new video scoreboards in the offseason. The video boards will be the same height as the ones they are replacing but about 60 feet wider. Production facilities at Crisler Center will also be upgraded as part of the $41 million project.
