44 THE WOLVERINE DECEMBER 2022   MICHIGAN RECRUITING starting at left tackle. He more than held his own against Michigan State's four-star edge commit Jalen Thomp- son in the game against Cass Tech. Overall, Herring is one of the most un- dervalued recruits in Michigan's 2023 recruiting class. He committed this summer and is still solid. 2. COLE CABANA (2023) RB • 5-11 • 180 Dexter (Mich.) High Cabana had a dominant performance when I saw him live in October, racking up 183 all-purpose yards and 3 touch- downs in a win over Saline (Mich.) High. The breakdown was 137 yards rushing and 2 TDs and 46 yards receiving with a 14-yard touchdown on a swing pass. Cabana is known for his speed and quickness, but he ran well between the tackles and embraced contact. He accumulated his yards through chunk gains as opposed to a couple of long runs. His best play of the night was actually a long reception, where he re- leased straight up the hash. Cabana will see time at both running back and slot at the next level. While he might not be a full-time running back, he is a valuable offensive weapon and one of the most dangerous playmakers nationally. On3 ranks Cabana as the No. 153 player and No. 7 running back nation- ally in the class of 2023. He committed to U-M early in the cycle and has re- mained solid. 1. ENOW ETTA (2023) Edge • 6-4 • 260 Colleyville (Texas) Covenant Christian Watching Etta is almost comical. The Michigan commit is completely domi- nant against lower-level competition in the Lone Star State and puts up crazy stat lines. It was no different when I saw him last month. Etta notched several tack - les, a sack and a fumble recovery, and deflected a pass that resulted in an in- terception. At 6-foot-4, 260 pounds, Etta is al- ready well built for the next level and should slide right into the Mike Morris role at Michigan. He plays with terrific power, but you can also see the athleti - cism and feet from his soccer and bas- ketball background. Etta has only been playing football for three years and has a high ceiling, but he's further along technically than you would expect. He is ranked as the No. 117 player and No. 16 defensive lineman nationally by On3. Etta committed to Michigan this summer and is locked in. COLE CABANA LOCKED IN WITH WOLVERINES Michigan hosted several highly touted recruits for its clash with Penn State Oct. 15, including prized running back commit Cole Cabana. The in-state star from Dexter (Mich.) High enjoyed taking in another U-M game and was impressed with the way the Wolverines trounced PSU. "It was a great win," Cabana said. "I almost predicted the score right, too. I was confident in the offense to put up big-time points, and 40-plus points shows that. The atmosphere was amaz- ing, and it was a great time." Just a day before making his way to The Big House, Cabana had a big game of his own, racking up 183 yards of total offense and 3 scores en route to leading Dexter to a huge 21-14 win over Saline (Mich.) High. Michigan running backs coach Mike Hart was in attendance for Cabana's game despite suffering a seizure dur- ing U-M's win at Indiana just six days earlier. "He told me a while ago he was com- ing," Cabana said. "I expected him to say he was going to skip it and catch a different one, but he said no excuses. It shows how much he cares. It meant a lot." Cabana added that he has built a close relationship with Hart throughout the recruiting cycle. "We're close," Cabana said. "We're texting every day. I go up there quite a bit, and we always hang out. He's a great person to be around and a great coach. I'm super excited to work with him." Cabana has been a frequent visitor at Michigan this fall and has also been im- pressed with the way Hart has coached up the running backs. 2023 Michigan Commitments Player Pos. Ht. Wt.
