SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2023 ■ 25 not all we need," Broussard pointed out. "You need someone with a human re- sources background, someone with an accounting background. Here at NC State, agriculture and engineering are always going to be big for us. But diver- sity can create a network for us. That's always important." Wetherill joked that his original selec- tion to the board "was a mistake," but the devoted NC State alum considers it a privilege to be in his current role. "It's exciting to be able to help an orga- nization that I dearly love," he said. "I'm hoping what we're doing is helping ath- letics and the school. It's really satisfying to see some of the things going on." Wetherill, who along with his wife, Debora, started Wetherill Engineering Inc. in 1993, noted that all major organi- zations require helpful oversight. "Any organization has needs," he said. "We're looking at those needs finan- cially, and also whether it makes sense. How can we meet some of those obliga- tions from time to time, if there is a dif- ferent fundraiser we can jump into? "Those are things we look at to see if we can help, whether it's athletics or Wolfpack Club, like the scoreboard. We are looking to see if we can help pay for that." One of the external complexities that Wetherill and his fellow board members will have to help guide the Wolfpack Club through in the current environment of collegiate athletics is the impact of new name, image and likeness provisions. Wetherill noted that the lack of gov- ernance from the NCAA around NIL matters has helped produce one of the biggest challenges "that we'll ever see." "It's pulling money from all different folks for different reasons," he said. "It's going to be a new era in fundraising." Navigating that will require the same kind of team effort that is involved in all aspects of NC State athletics, whether on the field or in the administrative offices. For the Wolfpack Club, that includes relying on the trusted board to provide the necessary guidance and oversight to achieve its objectives. "It's a pretty busy group as it is," Broussard noted. "I think today's en- vironment has given us a certain set of challenges to discuss, very specifically NIL. That's always a role of the board, to help us set policy at the top." From helping set those policies to ap- proving any major decisions, the Wolf- pack Club board is unquestionably a vital member of the NC State athletics team. "We are an overseer of the operations of the Wolfpack Club," Wetherill said. "I think we're there to help manage the operations, oversee our costs and make sure our primary goals of financing the scholarships can be met every year." ■ Etch Your Name Into Wolfpack History One Brick At A Time 1.
