32 CAVALIER CORNER UVA established its first three women's varsity sports: field hockey, basketball, and tennis during the 1973-74 academic year. The Women's Tennis program celebrated the 50th anniversary mark March 22-24 with a weekend full of activities. Friday's match kicked off the weekend with a 5-2 victory over Syracuse. Alumnae enjoyed a cocktail hour while cheering on the current student-athletes at the outdoor tennis complex at Boar's Head Sports Club. Saturday morning the alumnae were invited to hit with the team and engage in some friendly competitions at the indoor courts at Boar's Head. The evening celebra- tion included over 50 alumnae, former coaches, their guests, current student-ath- letes and coaches for dinner and a special program to reminisce of the past 50 years. The program started with a performance of the Good Ole Song from the Virginia Belles acapella group. Emcee and women's tennis student-athlete alumna, Lindsay Wortham then set the stage for the evening by recap- ping the rich history of the program as well as mentioning some of her fondest memo- ries of her time on Grounds. Following Lindsay's opening remarks, women's tennis student-athlete alumnae Cindy Brinker Simmons, Gabriela Chase, Caroline Varga, Julia Elbaba, and Rosie Jo- hanson all spoke to recount their experiences at UVA. Each spoke of specific memories and fond highlights during their time with the Women's Tennis program with a common theme of meaningful and impactful relation- ships, treasured memories, and experiences that shaped who they are today. The program wrapped up with remarks from current Head Coach Sara O'Leary. She shared many of the same sentiments as the alumnae and thanked them all for paving the way to where the program is today as one of the preemi- nent women's tennis programs in the country. The amazing weekend wrapped up Sun- day with a 6-1 victory over Boston College. The VAF was honored to have a part in celebrating the first three women's varsity sports this academic year and look forward to celebrating many more sports' 50-year milestones in the years to come.
