FABULOUS FINISH
In one of the most exciting moments during the
2024 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Champion-
ships, UVA graduate student Shane Cohen won the
800-meter title. Cohen executed a race strategy in
both the finals and prelims that saw him enter the
final turn trailing the entire field. He then maneuvered
to the outside of the pack and sprinted past the field
to cross the finish line first.
In the finals, he ran a personal-best time of
1:44.97, beating out race favorite Sam Whitmarsh of
Texas A&M at the tape. Cohen — a transfer from Divi-
sion II Tampa, where he competed for four seasons
— became the third Cavalier to win the 800-meter
title at the NCAA Championships.
