Under the Dome Anniversaries In Notre Dame Football History: Oct. 22-28 75 Years Ago: Oct. 22, 1938 One of the more controversial moments in Notre Dame football annals occurs while head coach Elmer Layden's No. 5-ranked Fighting Irish improve to 4-0 with a 7-0 victory against No. 13 Carnegie Tech. During the fourth quarter of the scoreless contest, Carnegie Tech has a fourth-and-one at its 46 when confused quarterback Paul Friedlander asks official John Getchell what down it is. An equally confused Getchell tells him it's third down. Tech loses two on the play and prepares to punt — when Getchell corrects his mistake and says it was fourth down, much to the vociferous protest of the Tartans, who had defeated the Irish the previous year. Notre Dame drives for the winning score off that possession, with Bud Kerr taking it in from seven yards out with eight minutes remaining. 60 Years Ago: Oct. 24, 1953 In a meeting between titan coaches Frank Leahy and Bobby Dodd, No. 1 Notre Dame snaps No. 4 Georgia Tech's 31-game unbeaten streak with a 27-14 victory in Notre Dame Stadium. Overshadowing the win is four-time national champion Leahy collapsing at halftime in the Notre Dame locker room with an attack of pancreatitis. While the Irish prepare to take the field in the second half, university executive vice president Rev. Ned Joyce gives the 45-year-old and unconscious Leahy last rites of the Catholic Church. Leahy survives, but the episode would help precipitate his resignation later that season. With assistants Joe McArdle and Bill Earley taking over in the second half, Notre Dame breaks a 7-7 tie
