■ football recruiting NC State Nov. 2 for the UNC game and to Rutgers Dec. 7. Through eight games his senior season, Preston had posted 51 stops, five tackles for loss, three sacks, three forced fumbles, a fumble recovery for a score and one pass broken up. He had also caught five passes for 76 yards and a touchdown. NC State is in the top four along with Southern Miss, Arizona State and Northern Illinois for Torrence Brown, a 6-4, 230-pounder from Tuscaloosa (Ala.) Academy. Brown is rated by Rivals.com as a two-star recruit. Greg Miclisse is a 6-1, 230-pounder from Palm Bay (Fla.) Bayside High who unofficially visited NCSU over the summer. The three-star prospect raved about the trip, but he is believed to be favoring Tennessee and UCLA. ■ Defensive Back The Pack has been in the mix with Shawn Boone of West Palm Beach (Fla.) Dwyer High longer than anyone, but will have to sweat out a few more visits. He has already been to NC State (Sept. 6), Arkansas (Sept. 13) and Maryland (Oct. 26). Boone (5-10, 175 pounds) will visit Ole Miss (Nov. 8) and recent offer Penn State before making a final decision. Rivals.com rates Boone, who is being recruited as a safety, as a three-star prospect. NCSU is fading with another three-star safety from Florida, Andre Godfrey of Miramar (Fla.) High.
