competently if both are forced to the bench.
Maybe Ricky Doyle or Max Bielfeldt can provide that next season, and if so,
there is a greater possibility that we will see two bigs playing together, but if not,
I would not anticipate seeing two bigs together except in the rarest of circum-
stances. Of course, if Mitch doesn't come back, we'll essentially never see two
bigs together next year.
2. Even if we can work it out to play two bigs together, my guess is that it will
only occur if it doesn't hinder the offense. It's not just that we have had the No. 1
Kenpom offense in back-to-back seasons — it's also how much better we have
been than even other top-flight offenses. The gap between our offensive points
per possession numbers last season and those of Arizona, the No. 20 offense in
the country, was almost a full 1/10 of a point per possession (.094 to be exact),
or about 6 points per game.
That same difference on defense (.094 points per possession/6 points per
game) was the gap between the No. 1 defense (Arizona) and one just below the
No. 52 defense (George Washington), or, with respect to Michigan, the difference
between our No. 109 defense and one which would have ranked 11th overall
(between UConn and Illinois). When you are that much above the curve in one
area, you're going to focus on maintaining that edge while making incremental
improvement on the other end of the floor … and I think that makes sense.
