wanted a quick decision. I told Coach Hiestand that I needed a little more time, and he was very understanding of that. He didn't rush me and force my hand. That meant a lot to me, and it showed me that he wanted me." Ruhland knew that Hiestand was visiting his school for a recruiting trip April 23. He looked at that trip as a perfect opportunity to give his future position coach some good news, in- stead of just making his commitment known over the phone. "Coach Hiestand showed up to my school. I walked down to the coaches offices to say hello to him, and I made sure that I was wearing my Notre Dame shirt and hat that day," Ruhland said. "I committed to him right then. He had to leave at that point after I said hello and told him I was commit- ted, but I called him later, we talked, and everyone was excited." Ruhland is rated as a three-star pros- pect, the No. 12 player in Illinois and the No. 49 offensive guard in the land by 247Sports. He knows that the public per- ceives him as added depth or a career backup, but that's not what Ruhland sees in himself. Not even close.
