With permissive NCAA legislation taking effect this summer, the athletic department is discussing ways to provide our student-athletes with additional nutritional needs to be a successful Division I student-athlete. Beginning Aug. 1, 2014, Division I institutions are permitted to provide meals and snacks to student-athletes as a benefit incidental to participation in intercollegiate athletics. What does it mean? It means that UVa is permitted to provide meals and snacks to all student- athletes (scholarship and non-scholarship) at its discretion as a benefit to participation in intercol- legiate athletics. As a result, the athletics department will need to generate additional resources for the Sports Nutrition area to ensure all student-athletes' nutritional needs are being met. While our student-athletes will continue to receive a meal plan, including a training table meal, additional steps will be taken to supplement their nutritional needs throughout the day and night. Supplemental food sources may include fruits, vegetables, bagels, cereal, yogurt, granola, beef jerky, sandwiches, wraps, protein bars and shakes and additional snacks/meals that will fuel UVa student-athletes. These measures and resources will help ensure that all student-athletes' nutritional needs are met incidental to practice and other activities to provide UVa with continued success on the field, while pursuing Uncompromised Excellence.
