BY STEVE DOWNEY I T WAS BUSINESS AS USUAL FOR Uni‑ versity of Virginia athletics in 2013‑14, with the Cavaliers continuing their long‑ running success in the Atlantic Coast Con‑ ference while also making their presence felt on the national level. Since the spring of 2002, no school has captured more ACC championships than UVa. That total grew to 63 this year when the school took home five titles — men's basketball, rowing, women's swimming and div‑ ing, men's tennis and women's tennis — for the second con‑ secutive year. Only Florida State (eight) captured more league crowns over the past 12 months. With its women's tennis title, UVa has now won champion‑ ships in 14 of the ACC's 25 sports — better than every conference foe except Florida State (15). In the past decade, Virginia, Florida State and Duke are the only schools to win at least one ACC title each academic year. Nationally, UVa finished fourth in the final 2013‑14 Learfield Sports Directors' Cup competi‑ tion for Division I schools. The fourth‑place finish is the second highest in program history (third in 2010) and marks the eighth consecutive year the Cavaliers' program has placed in the top 20. In addition, UVa is one of 14 schools to rank in the top 30 of the final Directors' Cup standings in each year of the program's existence. The UVa baseball team led the charge with a runner‑up fin‑ ish at the College World Series, while the women's lacrosse, men's soccer, women's soccer and men's tennis programs all registered national semifinal appearances. In addition, the rowing team finished fifth at the NCAA Championships for the second consecutive season, the women's tennis team made its first‑ever NCAA quarterfi‑ nal appearance and the men's basketball program advanced to its first NCAA Sweet 16 since 1995. Individually, women's soccer third‑year Mor‑ gan Brian and men's basketball fourth‑year Joe Harris were named the school's top female and male athletes (features to follow).
