TOP MEN'S TEAMS When the dust settled at a scintillating College World Series in Omaha, Neb., the Cavaliers baseball squad fell just short of its first national championship, losing the best‑of‑three finals against Vanderbilt two games to one with a pair of one‑run defeats. Despite the tough loss, the Cavaliers still had plenty to be proud of. They posted a 53‑16 record, notched their third CWS berth in six seasons and advanced to the finals for the first time in school history. In recording the second‑most wins in school history, Virginia finished second nationally with a 2.23 team ERA, which tied for the second‑lowest mark in the program annals. UVa also set a school record with a .981 fielding percentage, which ranked fourth nationally. Additionally, eight Cavaliers were se‑ lected in the 2014 Major League Baseball Draft, tied for the second most of any school. The Cavaliers had three players selected in the first round, the most of any program in 2014. The men's basketball team captured the conference regular‑season title and the ACC Tournament title en route to their Sweet 16 berth. The Cavaliers (30‑7 overall, 16‑2 ACC) tied the program record for wins and earned a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament for the fourth time in school history. The Wahoos won the league's regular‑season title for the first time since 1981 and then captured the ACC Tournament for the first time since 1976. UVa's 16‑2 conference record marked a program best and tied the ACC mark for most league wins in a season (1998‑99 Duke). The Cavaliers also ranked No. 1 nationally in scoring defense, allowing 55.7 points per game. Also notable, the men's cross country team finished 13th at the NCAA Championships, the men's soccer squad reached the NCAA College Cup for the 11th time and extended the nation's longest cur‑ rent streak of consecutive NCAA Tournament bids to 33, and the men's tennis team broke the ACC all‑sport consecutive conference win record (an active streak of 122 matches, regular season and post‑ season) en route to a final four showing in the NCAA Tournament. A pair of one-run defeats to Vanderbilt in the College World Series finals was the only thing standing in the way of the UVa baseball team capping an outstanding season with a national championship.
