TOP COACHES Steve Swanson (women's soccer) was named the National Soccer Coaches Association of America National Coach of the Year and the ACC Coach of the Year, while Tony Bennett (men's basketball), Augie Busch (women's swim‑ ming and diving), Brian O'Connor (baseball) and Kevin Sauer (rowing) also earned ACC Coach of the Year honors in 2013‑14. Swanson, who was named the head coach of the United States U‑23 National Team in December, orchestrated the women's soccer team's unbeaten regular season (19‑0‑0) and first College Cup appearance in 22 years. Along the way, the Cavaliers set numerous school records, including wins (24), goals (78), assists (80), points (236), shots per game (20.5) and shutouts (16). Bennett, who guided the men's basketball squad to the ACC regu‑ lar‑season and tournament cham‑ pionships in the same season for the first time in school history, was also named the National Associa‑ tion of Basketball Coaches District 2 Coach of the Year and U.S. Basket‑ ball Writers Association District 3 Coach of the Year. Virginia became one of just three teams (NC Central and Southeast Missouri State) in the nation to improve its win total in each of the past five seasons and secured its third consecutive ACC winning season (16‑2 in 2013‑14, 11‑7 in 2012‑13 and 9‑7 in 2011‑12) for the first time since 1981‑83. In his first season at the helm, Busch led the women's swimming and diving team to its seventh consecutive ACC crown, a conference record, and an 11th‑place effort at the NCAA Championships, the best showing of any ACC team and Virginia's highest finish since 2010 (ninth place). Busch also led the men's team to its eighth consecutive ACC title and 10th in the last 11 years. O'Connor received the ACC baseball's top coaching honor for the fourth time in the last five years, and the fifth time overall. Since the award debuted in 1981, only Florida State's Mike Martin (seven times) has won the honor more than O'Connor. On May 9, O'Connor recorded his 500th career coaching win at Virginia, becoming the second fastest to reach 500 wins in ACC history (behind only Martin). Sauer led the rowing squad to its fifth consecutive ACC title and 14th in 15 years, plus a fifth‑place showing at the NCAA Championships. He has now been recognized as the ACC Coach of the Year 10 times, including each of the last five years. Women's soccer head coach Steve Swanson was named the Na- tional Soccer Coaches Association of America National Coach of the Year and the ACC Coach of the Year after leading his team to an undefeated (19-0-0) regular season.
