From Lake Forest, Ill., the hometown of 2013 Irish quarterback Tommy Rees, Cavalaris walked on as a 2011 fresh- man, has played in 14 games and been a starter on special teams coverage, re- cording seven career tackles. He is en- rolled in the Mendoza College of Busi- ness as an accountancy major. Fiessinger, who played at famed Moeller High School in Cincinnati, held the post of signaling in the play calls to the offense in 2012 and 2013, and will continue in that role this season. He made a game appearance in the 38-0 rout of Wake Forest in 2012. Fiessinger is enrolled in the College of Science as an applied and computational mathemat- ics and statistics major. • Plantz joined the team during the spring of 2012 when there was a short- age of bodies in the backfield, and he appeared in six games that season, pri- marily on the kickoff return unit. The son of 1982-85 Notre Dame offensive lineman Ron Plantz, the younger Plantz graduated last May from the Mendoza College of Business with a degree in finance. He is enrolled in the Graduate School taking finance coursework. "Every year since I've been here, we have awarded a scholarship to a walk- on," Kelly said. "I did that at other stops along the way. I think that builds a credibility to your program that they are, in fact, respected for the work they do and have a chance to earn a scholar- ship. "After the 85 scholarships, those next 20 players are very important to your depth and how things pan out during the season."
