Getting To Know … FIFTH-YEAR SENIOR CORNERBACK CODY RIGGS WIN OR LOSE, PLAYERS WILL FACE THE MUSIC When Notre Dame lost at home last Sep- tember to Oklahoma (35-21), the Irish play- ers eschewed the recent tradition of singing the Alma Mater with the student body and headed straight to the locker room. Head coach Brian Kelly said the decision actually was made in 2012, but because the Irish didn't lose at home, it never had to be enforced. "I just don't think it's appropriate to put your players after defeat in a situation where they are exposed," he explained the day after the loss to the Sooners. Upon further review, the policy has changed again. Win or lose, the Fighting Irish players will sing the Alma Mater after the game with the student body. "The players didn't bring it to me," Kelly said. "I brought it to the players — just like I brought it to the players last year. We have a Unity Council. I addressed it last year with the Unity Council. We decided as a team that's not what we wanted to do. "This year we brought it back up to the Unity Council, and they voted that's something that they wanted to do. I'm all for what my team wants to do, and we will make that work." Sophomore cornerback Devin Butler, junior defensive end Romeo Okwara and the rest of the Irish players will take part in the Alma Mater no matter what happens on the field. PHOTO BY BILL PANZICA
