Major League Baseball CLAYTON RICHARD IS HOPING FOR COMEBACK WITH ARIZONA Former Michigan pitcher Clayton Richard underwent AC joint surgery last summer and thoracic outlet sur- gery in the offseason, and he spent months afterward rehabbing at his home in Lafayette, Ind. The San Di- ego Padres released him after he went 2-5 with a 7.01 ERA in 2013, but the Arizona Diamondbacks picked the lefty up after he began throwing from a mound again June 19. "I'm just excited about another step in the right direction," Richard told the Indianapolis Star. "It's an- other opportunity to get back on a mound against professional compe- tition. I'm excited to get out there." Richard, who threw for a few teams before deciding to sign with Arizona, was patient before return- ing to the mound. "You don't want teams to come in and you're not healthy enough to be impressive," Richard said. "Velocity was a part of it. I didn't see the point of throwing for teams before I was ready to actually go somewhere. "It was about having command of my pitches and looking like be- ing a feasible option in professional baseball." Richard, whose last Major League game was June 21, 2013, struggled to regain his form at Double-A Mobile and Triple-A Reno.
