drives — first on third-and five, then
on third-and-six. According to Nuss-
meier, those third-down efforts (4 of
13 overall, compared to 7 of 15 by the
Irish) proved a telling factor.
Plus, the Wolverines came away
somewhat deflated when they pulled
points from neither drive, because of
missed field goals. After that, Michi-
gan's offensive game featured a se-
ries of issues that put them in bad
down-and-distance situations, and
fifth-year senior quarterback Devin
Gardner's four second-half turnovers
resulted in some degree from trying
to press the issue.
Fifth-year senior Devin Gardner and the Wolverines could not put any points on the board
versus Notre Dame, marking the first time U-M was shutout since 1984.
