WHERE ARE THEY NOW?
"I happened to be in on the play
when Thom Darden intercepted that
pass up over the Ohio State player in
that 10-7 win [in 1971], when Woody
went nuts," Eaton said. "Mike was
hurt at the time, and I was on the field
for that. I can remember that one dis-
tinctly."
He channeled the memories, the de-
termination, and the organizational
skills well past Michigan. Eaton taught
at Riverside High School in Dearborn
Heights for a year, then spent 16 more
at Clinton High School, southwest of
Ann Arbor, coaching for a decade and
serving as principal for six.
He left hands-on education to work
for School-Tech, Inc., owned by his
father-in-law, iconic U-M athletics
director Don Canham. Eaton ran the
plant operations for the firm that pro-
vided athletic and science supplies to
schools.
Seeing Canham operate proved
another level of education, Eaton as-
sured.
"He had the tenacity and the mar-
keting sense and the understanding
that football was king for the athletic
department," Eaton said. "I remember
him saying to me, 'There is just no bet-
ter spectator sport than college football
on a Saturday.' He understood that."
Canham also teamed with Schem-
bechler to provide fireworks for years
to come.
"They took it to an extraordinary
next level," Eaton said. "It was fun
being part of that. Both of them were
young and energetic, and times were
changing. You knew something spe-
cial was happening." ❏
