WHERE ARE THEY NOW? During his sophomore season, Vanderkaay would win his first NCAA title, in the 400 freestyle, and before the meet had concluded, he had added victories in the 1,500 freestyle and the 800 freestyle relay. He stood atop the podium twice more, winning the 500 freestyle in 2005 and 2006, and now ranks eighth in Michigan history with five NCAA championships. His winning 500 free time of 4:08.60 in 2006 was an American record — a mark he himself later re-established — and nine years after graduation still stands as the top performance in NCAA history. "That was the record held by Tom Dolan, who is maybe the best swim- mer in Michigan history, and my en- tire career, the goal I was 100 percent focused on was setting a new record," A five-time national champion during his Michigan career, Vanderkaay was named the Big Ten Swimmer of the Year in 2005 and 2006.
